Hydroxypropyl chitosan is a water-soluble derivative obtained through the hydroxypropylation of chitosan. It retains chitosan's inherent excellent properties—such as biocompatibility and biodegradability—while offering significantly improved solubility, making it widely applicable in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
In the pharmaceutical field, hydroxypropyl chitosan is extensively used in drug delivery systems due to its superior biocompatibility and biodegradability. It can form complexes with negatively charged drug molecules via electrostatic interactions, protecting the drugs from degradation by gastric acid and enabling targeted release. Research indicates that hydroxypropyl chitosan, when used as a drug carrier, can significantly enhance the bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs and prolong their circulation time in the body. Furthermore, active groups within its molecular structure can form covalent bonds with various drug molecules, facilitating controlled drug release.
